Tri-Me

Apr 24

6 mile walk today on the Methuen Rail Trail (started on the NH line so it was a little longer than 2.4 miles each way).  It was a gorgeous day, and a wonderful way to spend the time while my new C-Max was in the shop for what was basically a software upgrade.  The trail starts about a 1/4 mile from the car dealership.

My knee is bothering me, but it doesn’t get any worse when I walk; I can deal with that.

Also got a new purple watchband in the mail today for my Pebble watch!  Now awaiting the purple skin/screen protector I ordered.  Pebble did not have the foresight to make the watch available in purple, so I’m taking care of it myself. :D

What I did yesterday while waiting for the dreaded vet appointment

Took a 5 mile walk with Quinnie (she of the freckles).  Quinnie was happy about that.

Wore my new sneakers.  With new purple laces in them.  Took me 3 tries at the New Balance outlet (over the last month) to get some that fit the way I like them.  These are women’s 840s in size 10.5 EE.  I have found that the men’s 840s, in size 9EE, also fit.  This was the only pair of women’s in this size, and they have purple accents and purple soles.

Saw lovely purple flowers

and the first dandelions of the season, although I didn’t get a picture of those.  Also saw these awesome trees blooming - looked like popcorn!

The rest of the day sucked, of course.  I’m sure I’m going to be tearing up off and on all day for the next few days, anyway.  It’s strange to only have 3 dogs.  We haven’t had just 3 dogs in this house since 1998 or 1999.

Tonight we will be saying goodbye to Q - Maine-ly Tiberius Lady Q, the last of my Australian Shepherds.  It’s been 14 years…  hard to believe.  Hard to say goodbye.

She will very much be missed.

Do you know what this is?

image

Sure, it looks like the edge of a sporting field, and sometimes it is.  It’s located in Hanover, NH.  On the right-hand side of that green fence, however, near that white birch, is the Appalachian Trail.

I went to a quilt show in Hanover this morning.  It was quite a drive.  On my way back home I stopped near this field and thought about walking out there, just to touch a white blaze.  Then I drove back through Hanover on my way out of town and noticed that every other utility pole had that 2” x 6” white blaze on it.  It’s calling me.

Must be time to get back to getting there.  It’s been a rough two months or so, but my knee is better (most of the time) and the broken finger (thanks to a goat) is mostly healed; other issues are taking more time, but there are more mental issues than physical ones.  In the meantime, things are warming up, chicks are hatching, gardening will be done, hiking is being planned…  the AT is calling me.  It will be a couple or a few years yet till I can get there, but I will get there.

What’s your AT?

Click a few dots, and this program will try to guess your age. -

It’s part of an experiment to analyze how motor control changes with age. It nearly guessed my age [ 29- my birthday is next month].

What about you? via jtotheizzoe:

thissssssssss is creepy and amazing, and guessed that i am 30 (i am)

This is bullshit. It guessed I was 49.

29 for me. Only four years off isn’t too bad.

It guessed 29 for me! I like being younger by 2 years!

It guessed I was 30; actually, I’ll be 51 in just over a week!

Michelle is okay per Nicole.

I just got an automatic text update from Rook at 40k, so I assume he’s okay.

Thank God everyone is ok. Please reblog so everyone that’s worried can know.

Not much gym time, but some very busy days…

The goats and I are getting along well.  The babies are being bottle-fed three times a day, but will be down to twice a day in a week.  They are now eating grain and nibbling at hay.

Today I finished off six pints of homemade maple syrup, from my own trees! I still have a little more sap to boil off, and we’ll see how much the trees co-operate for another batch.  We should have another week or so of sugaring weather.

I also set 11 eggs in my old tabletop incubator

while bugging hubby for a new incubator, possibly for my birthday (about 2 months away).  I didn’t, however, buy any new chicks at the feed store! That was hard!  We’ll see, in 21 days, how hard my rooster is working, and how well this old incubator is functioning. (But I really want a precision digital incubator with an egg turner.)

Looks like I’ll be close to home for a bit

Between getting the babies and goat settled in, boiling sap, and now - a new pending snowstorm (8-12 inches predicted from Saturday through Sunday afternoon) I will likely be home for a while.  Good thing I like it here!  Here are a few things I can share:

These are about half of the eggs collected yesterday.  One of these things is not like the others!

This led to an investigation of egg weights, and the discovery of something I want to get - an egg scale!

So I discovered that most of my eggs weigh between 2.0 & 2.3 ounces, with the dark brown ones tending to be larger than that. I also have a couple of bantam hens that lay small white eggs.  The giant egg here weighed 3.8 ounces, and had a double yolk! I felt sorry for the chicken that laid it.  The egg, however, was delicious.

And this is a picture of a hay rack and a bunch of roosters at the farm where we bought the goats.  I have asked for one of these roosters.  I love the one on the right, light-colored with speckles.  She’s going to call me when she corners him (easier at night when they roost).

is the big one the mom? or just another goat? they will all get along fine? did they mind getting in the truck? how did they travel? so intriguing! I just wanna pet em!
I don’t know where the rest of this post went!
The big one is actually the mom of the white baby, but they’ve been separated for a couple of weeks so (hopefully) not likely to nurse.  The tan baby (Dory) was rejected by her mom, so she’s been bottle-fed - in the house, at the breeder’s.  Snowball was brought in to keep Dory company. It’s just a coincidence that the milk goat I ended up buying (after trying milk from a couple of goats) ended up being Snowball’s mom.
They will all get along just fine.  As it is *so* frigid in NH right now, I’ll be letting the babies sleep in the house in a dog crate and put them out in the barn during the day to acclimate.  They’ll be bottle-fed three times a day.  The mom will be milked twice a day. (Among my esoteric skill set, I do know how to milk goats, as well as make chevre & mozzarella.)
The babies were carried out to the truck; Wheat had to be helped up a little.  It’s a tall truck!  They did well on the way home; better, once Wheat decided to lie down! She didn’t do well on the stops, starts & corners when she was trying to stand.  She did enjoy watching out the windows! They are quite curious creatures.  Once we got home, I helped Wheat a little and led her (she has a collar) into the barn.  The babies followed along like puppies.  Dory now has a “sweater” on made from a sweatshirt sleeve.  Snowball is quite a bit bigger (she’s 12 days older, which is a *lot* at this point) and a bit hardier.  She didn’t seem quite as cold.
